What New Years Eve Really Means To Me

That I can finally get rid of the creature that's invaded my living room. You know, the dead one whose needles are sparse, brown and crackly? That makes it absolutely forbidden to light a candle within 150 feet of it. This picture is from when it first arrived and filled the room with a lovely smell. Now it makes me curse with its carpet of needles that stick in between my toes every time I pass by it. We have a tradition of taking it up to the beach where, for a donation, firefighters light a huge fire with them. They come right up to the cars and retrieve them, meaning we just pull up like a drive thru tree service and they haul 'em out and throw them in the pile. A twoonie in their boot and it's a done deal. Awesome.

A drive through tree disposal? Brilliant!

We have to take ours to the firehall nearby, but they actually then collect and mulch them for use in the city parks gardens, which I think is a grand way to recycle them.

we do the tree chipping to...by donation..people drive up and we go over collect the trees out of their vehicle and hold the boot up they don't have to get out...2 lanes no waiting...one of the arbourists brings his truck and donates his time....over 2 days we usually get about $3000 all of whcih goes to local charity, we'll see what happens this year, the city has implemented streetside pick up of garden and yard material for no cost...xmas trees are included if they are cut in half

I would love to be at that bonfire! We do the tree chipping here but since I'm an apartment dweller, ie no live trees allowed, I don't really know how it works.

I'm not ready to take down my tree just yet!

Barb...our guys sort of toned down the big fire, opting for a smaller one accompanied by the chipping machine.

Allergic...that's a shame Allison. The smell just says Christmas to me. Although I'd really like to start getting smaller, Charlie Brown trees though - Linds insists we have to have six footers. I suggested artificial once and she had a panic attack.

kelly...$3000 - that's awesome. Good job. Sounds like the same kind of set up we have here. Now I'm wondering if my little toonie is enough...that's what they'd suggested but I think I should throw in five this year.

tocatta...no live trees eh? That's too bad but I guess I understand that - fire hazards for those (like an aunt of mine) who like to keep their trees up until April. At that point it's no longer a tree!

Mel...you crack me up. "Chuck the tomato cage in the closet" sounds very practical/low maintenance to me. I think you've got something there.

P.S....You're so great.
