No White Men/G Strings Allowed

There's one more thing that's not sitting right with me right now. There's been a history of some bad behavior by a few firefighters here over the years...claims of harrassment by female coworkers. A scandal a few decades ago that involved highschool girls frequenting the firehouse - things of that nature. So how are these issues being addressed? Well the stupidest fucking solutions I've ever heard of, that's all. I thought they'd gone nutso when this strategy was put into place as a remedy for the situation. Now they've had another flash of brilliance. Read about it here.

If this isn't discrimination, I don't know what is. What if my son decides he wants to become a local firefighter?....why should he pay the price for the actions of a few ass clowns before him? How is this fair? This is Mayor Brodie's ass kissing at its finest...I can't stand the man as he people pleases his way to the next election. I just think this is so wrong and that the best man/woman for the job should be the only basis for hiring. I don't think race, color, gender, marital status, nose size, or anything other than superior qualifications should come into play. And, if I'm ever involved in a fire and need to call for help, I want to know that they're sending out the best man/woman for the job. Not someone in there to equal things out to make everyone happy. And I don't give a rat's ass what their underwear looks like as long as they can hold the hose. What do you think?

Yep Richmond FD has been mocked ruthlessly for the underwear thing since it was announced last year.

About the hiring issue, I understand what they are getting at, having a workforce thats more in tune with the make-up of the population...a noble idea...but...a dumb ass way of doing it. I think they have to encourage all groups to apply, even have information sessions for those groups but still hire whichever candidate is best suited no matter what.

Those issues with the female firefighters are more than unfortunate, the male staff and management should be ashamed and there should have been consequences. Really pathetic that a small group of immature idiots could tarnish the reputation of an entire department

See I don't get why a firehall needs to be reflective of the community. They need to be trained to fight fires, regardless of who in the community they're fighting them for. At a time when we're trying to eliminate racism and encourage multiculturalism, this takes a big step in the other direction. The editorials were flooded today in the local paper with people feeling very discouraged by this move. To paint a picture of "white men" as the problem is wrong...it was a few bad men and the color of their skin shouldn't have entered into the picture at all and is irrelevant. White men shouldn't be punished, THESE men should be. My son is an upstanding white man and if he wants to become a firefighter he can't because of some idiots that he'll never know. How is that fair?

A-friggin'-men!! Let's try something radical... how 'bout hiring those are a ... hold onto your hats... QUALIFIED. I know, I know... it's completely radical...

What a bunch of ass-kissing morons. As I live in the States, I'm sure you can see how I'd be especially sensitive to unqualified idiots getting jobs... like say, running the country... over those who are far more qualified but may not have the right hair style, or wear the wrong color tie.

And I agree with you deb... we need to learn to stop generalising...painting "white men" as the problem is simply reverse discrimination. End of story.

glad you get it E. Things are getting out of hand here in Richmond and it's not a good situation. This is how tensions build and in order to solve the problems of discrimination/racism, etc. we need to eliminate all of it. This is just the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

I think all the other firehalls wish the Richmond FD would burn down. Everytime they try to make amends they do something that only adds fuel to the already volatile working conditions and public relations fiasco.

I think a workforce needs to be more in tune with the general population but not through the elimination of qualified candidates and not through reverse discrimination. Now with the leaking of that document any new member that is hired even with the best qualifications will be suspect. What a mess.

Being in tune is one thing but alienating an entire group of people is another. A couple of bad apples don't represent the entire "white" population here and that's what's so frustrating. To attach the "white" label to this is the problem and it's totally wrong. These were individuals and should be treated as such. It's not just the firehall tc...it's the way this city is run lately. Instead of creating a feeling of unity, tensions are rising and that's worrying. If they're trying to be more "in tune" with the population they're definitely going about it the wrong way because they're not considering the entire population with this move. It's ridiculous.

i agree deb, i don't suggest hiring one group over another...the most qualified should get the job and standards should never be changed for one group. Equal opportunity. The idea behind having a more representative mix are well founded. Funny enough I just wrote an essay on that. Also some of the problem is the culture of firefighters that goes way back. I wish your son best of luck, lots of competition to get on a department especially in the lower mainland, but if he is committed and perseveres it'll work out
